Marcaj — Privacy Policy
Last updated: 23 October 2026
Marcaj is an Android hiking map and navigation app developed by GRANDIT S.R.L., CUI 47824955, Trade Registry No. J2023000744051, registered office in Oradea, Bihor County, Romania. For any question about this policy, contact us at contact@grandit.ro.
In short
Marcaj sends no information from your phone (apart from an email you choose to send us). The app does not request permission to access the internet, so it cannot transmit data anywhere: not to us, not to anyone else. It has no user accounts, no ads, no usage analytics and no automatic crash reports. Everything it uses and saves stays on your phone.
1. What the app uses, and why
- Location (GPS): to show where you are on the map, to guide you along a route and, if you start a trip, to record the path you walk.
- Physical activity (the step sensor): to follow your position between GPS readings, from your steps, so GPS is used less often and the battery lasts longer.
- The phone's compass and barometer: for direction, altitude and warning of sudden changes in the weather.
- Notifications: for a trip in progress and for warnings, for example when you leave the route or arrive.
Location is used only while the app is open, or while you navigate or record a trip you started; the phone then shows a persistent notification. Marcaj does not request background location access.
2. What the app saves, only on your phone
- recorded trips (the path walked, with time, altitude and distance);
- saved places and the route you are following;
- the last area of the map you looked at, and the app's settings;
- what the app learns about your stride, to estimate distance better.
This data is excluded from the phone's cloud backup. It can move only in a direct transfer to a new phone of yours (by cable or phone to phone), never through a server.
3. Who it is shared with
No one, automatically. Only if you choose to export a trip or your saved places (as a GPX file) and send them through another app (email, messaging and so on) do they go where you send them; from then on, that app's policy applies. Likewise, a GPX file you open in Marcaj is read only on the phone.
When you open the app, it asks the Play Store app on your phone whether there is a newer Marcaj. The question stays on the phone: the Play Store keeps track of updates for every app anyway, and Marcaj sends nothing through it.
4. How long it is kept, and how to delete it
The data stays on the phone until you delete it. You can delete any trip from the trip list, and your saved places and the active route from within the app. Uninstalling the app deletes all of its data.
5. If you write to us
The “Send feedback” button in the app opens your email app with a message to contact@grandit.ro, already filled in with the app version, the Android version and the phone model. You see the whole message before sending and can delete anything in it; nothing leaves unless you press Send. If you write to us (with this button or directly), we receive your email address, your message and the details you left in it. We use them only to answer you and to fix problems, keep them only as long as needed, and delete them on request. The legal basis is our legitimate interest in answering your request.
6. Your rights
The data in the app never reaches GRANDIT S.R.L.: you control it entirely, on your phone. For messages you send us, you can ask at any time for access, correction or deletion. For any question under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), contact us at contact@grandit.ro. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the Romanian data protection authority (ANSPDCP) — www.dataprotection.ro.
7. Children
Marcaj is not directed at children and collects no data about anyone.
8. Map data
The maps are built into the app and come from OpenStreetMap (© OpenStreetMap contributors, ODbL licence) and the European Copernicus programme (terrain and forests). They contain no data about you.
9. Changes to this policy
If Marcaj ever gains a feature that sends data from the phone, this policy will be updated before that feature appears. The date of the last update is shown at the top of the page.
